I am always thinking about this..especially as a school librarian.

the library is a social medium

10 ways library schools should be teaching social media

A few days ago I came across a wonderful article on Mashable entitled “10 Ways Journalism Schools are teaching social media.” The thought struck me about 30 seconds in: all these concepts should apply to library school, but why aren’t they being pushed and taught in the same way?

Reading Dickens Four Ways

How 'Little Dorrit' fares in multiple text formats

It was often maddening to keep finding and losing my place as I switched from format to format. But as an experiment, it taught me a great deal about my reading habits, and about how a text reveals itself differently as the reading context changes. Along the way, I also began to make some predictions about winners and losers in the evolution of books.

YA Review: "The Year We Disappeared" by Cylin Busby and John Busby (rated 5 stars)

by Cylin Busby

This poignant memoir, told in alternating chapters from father to daughter, describes the year in which life completely changed for the Busby family. John Busby, an officer for the Falmouth police department, was shot and nearly killed by the town mob man, Ray Meyer. The family goes from being well-liked and out-going to outcasts once the investigators realize that this was the attempted murder of a police officer. They build a wired fence around their property, are given a dangerous police dog and are under surveillance and protection by the police department 24 hours a day. The strain and stress of the shooting and all its after affects nearly destroy Officer Busby as well as his family.

It is a real page turner. I could not put it down. I am not sure why it is considered YA but I think, for 9th grade and up, it is a very intriguing read.
